What do you seek? (John 1:38)

As a follower of Jesus, what do you seek? Do you want to know where he lives? Do you want to know what he wants for you? Do you want something earthly to be fulfilled?

I want to share a personal conversation today. My reading for the day was David and how he was preparing everything for Solomon to be successful as he takes on the venture of building God a temple in 1 Chronicles 22.

But, I love seeing words in red, they make me perk up, so I flipped over to John. Jesus addressed me in those happy red letters. ” What do you seek?”. It felt personal, so I read the rest of the verse.

“Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, ‘what do you seek?’”

-John 1:38

Notice who He was talking to, the ones who were following Him, literally. I think it has a bearing on who we are. We are His followers and why are we following Him? We seek something. So, here is the question. What do you seek, Christian? I can only tell you what I seek and it was answered.

I seek intimacy with God, He can give me anything but I want everything. I want Him. I want to know how to love Jesus, how to follow Him, how to keep His word. Last night while I was seeking answers I came across this verse.

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.”

-John 14:23-24

I do not see this as a coincidence, God talks to us through his love letters to us – The Bible. I was distressed and sought Him. He gave me something fundamental in lieu of an answer, not a solution to my problem. He brought me to the basics. I do not need to know if I am right or wrong, all I need to know is that I am aligning my will to His will and I am doing the best I can to listen and obey.

My desire is to be a true follower of Jesus, one that knows His voice (John 10:27-28), knows how to love Him and whose will is aligned with His. He is our Lord and Master, our Rabi. And He wants to make His home with us. What a blessing!

Dear Jesus,

Teach me to follow you closely, make your word apparent to me. Thank you for answering prayers. I do not deserve your mercy and love but your blood brought me to the doorstep of grace. I am eternally thankful for Your sacrifice. May all glory be Yours now and always.

Amen!!
