What treasures are you collecting? We know the tangible baubles will soon vanish. There are lots of pithy phrases out there to illustrate this idea. Phrases like, “Home is where the heart it”, “You are what you love”, “Chasing after…”, etc., What should we as Christians treasure?

In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus instructs us on not laying up treasures on earth for ourselves. The one verse that hit me hard this morning is, verse 21. “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”.
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:19-21
I hope that my treasure is a strong everlasting relationship with God, followed by strong relationship with Jeff, the boys and friends, in that order. I do not want to believe that there is anything I treasure that belongs to this world. I love many things I have, like my dogs, my shoes, my Tiffany’s, etc., but I would not call them my treasure.
As part of wanting an everlasting relationship is the ability to hear and discern the instructions from God. What He teaches through The Bible, nudges from the Holy Spirit, thoughts that resonate with the scripture while in prayer or prayerfully thinking about God. These are treasures. His words, especially when they are worth sharing and they apply to others. When shared it will multiply amongst others but will not diminish within me. Is this not the best kind of treasure?
God talks to us all day long. I know this because God wants a relationship with us and came down to live among us so we can find our way back to Him through Jesus. We are not always tuned in when God talks to us. If we had to pretend life was like a big playground with God watching us from the sidelines. We would notice Him giving instructions, correcting us and sometimes stepping in to protect us. All like a good parent.

Don’t let the allure of the playground make you miss out your ability to build a relationship with God. Make sure to lock eyes with Him through the ups and downs of the teeter-totter of life. I like going to the playground with Him and I hope you do too, I also hope that I listen to His voice and not let the noise in the playground drown it.
Dear Jesus,
Your sacrifice allowed for the care-free life I live now. You have saved me and wrapped me in a blanket of comfort even when this world continues to convince me otherwise. Today, please help my mind stay on You. Amen.
