Ever wondered why Jesus loves children? Why do we love children for that matter? Are we channeling Jesus or is there something special about kids? I am sure these sound like silly questions if you are thinking, “Of course we love children, they are cute and lovable”.

This blog here does not answer why Jesus loves kids, but it will help us grow in our relationship with Jesus.
I have the distinct honor of serving in our local church’s kid’s club. Every Wednesday, our church brings together local children (from willing families) of all ages, feeds them, teaches them scripture, organizes fun activities and sends them home.
Last Wednesday, as a follow on to Matthew 19:14 (‘But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” ‘). I asked my group of 9 kids, why Jesus loves children. I got 8 distinct answers from this cute crowd.
The answers ranged from “Jesus loves everyone” to “Jesus died for us”. All the answers were around Jesus. What struck me is that this group of kids were rambunctious, a little unruly and yet, they knew it had nothing to do with who they are. It has to do with who He is. He is love and that is why He loves. He is good and that is why He loves. He is kind and that is why He loves. He is merciful and that is why He loves.
They could not articulate in these exact words but they knew, the source of love was because of who He is and not who they are. Quite simple actually. They see it. They see the goodness all around and know it is not their doing. When are we as adults going to see it?
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
Psalms 19:1
And the firmament shows His handiwork.”
We were all like that once. Let’s try an exercise today to get back to that. In every good thing you spot today, give glory to our good Lord. Goodness is all around us and in us, take notice. Observe and rejoice.
Dear God,
May our words, actions and thoughts give you glory today. Guide us to be engaged in Your presence, lead us to the child-like state that You love, bring out the child in us today. I pray this in your name, Jesus. Amen!
