A Secure Channel

Reading is one of life’s great pleasures. There are countless books out there, and then there is the Bible: one of the greatest gifts mankind has ever been blessed with. A valuable and loving message from our one true God. When you stop to think about it, without words how would we read? Language is essential for conveying meaning from one heart to another. We also have sign language and touch, of course. But all of these are forms of communication known to man. Anything beyond what we can conceive of is beyond us entirely, and yet God communicates anyway.

As it turns out, if we have a heart, a soul, a mind, and life itself, then we have all the right gear to listen to the Holy Spirit. A gentle nudge, a feeling, a thought inspired by the fruit of the Spirit. These are the ways only He can use to initiate a conversation through a secure channel, a channel meant only for the person in question. God and His child. Each one of us has our own secure channel. How exciting!

I am sure all of us have had a moment in life when we tried to get the attention of somebody who could not hear us or was lost in a group setting. It makes me think of my trusted and true German friend, my German Shepherd. She loves to seek me. It is a game we play: I hide and she seeks. She uses every tool in her arsenal to find me. She first stops and scopes the landscape, rules out the usual hiding spots, and then deploys her trusty sense of smell. This does not always work when I hide in the car and duck out of clear sight. And when she realizes that all else has failed, she barks.

If I slow down to think about it, God is using every tool and means we can comprehend to communicate with us. Am I seeking Him as fervently as my German Shepherd seeks me? Do I bark out loud when I cannot find Him? And to think, He is constantly communicating with me. All I have to do is be still, know that He is God, and maybe just listen.

“Listen, O daughter,
Consider and incline your ear;
Forget your own people also, and your father’s house;”

-Psalm 45:10

We are granted a glimpse into a pure form of communication through the nudges of the Holy Spirit. Let us enjoy it and grow in it. I hope you have a Spirit-chatter filled day today. God bless you.

Dear God,

Thank You for communicating with me even when I am lost in my own selfish world. Please teach me to lean in and hear You clearly. Your loving kindness never ceases to amaze me, and the mercy and grace You show to an insignificant creation like me makes me never want to stop singing Your praise. Amen.
