Are you teachable?

Are you open to learning from all sources? Do you have the humility to absorb information presented to you that is biblically accurate but from a source that is questionable? We are wired to be cautious through generalization but God does not conform to human standards, His ways are higher that ours (Isaiah 55: 8-9)

Last Christmas, Jeff and I watched a sappy Christmas movie. It made no impression on me and so I cannot tell you the name of the movie. The plot had something to do with spreading Christmas cheer. However, it made it to my article here because one word grabbed my attention.

The protagonist was tucking her kid in bed and was praying over her. She asked that God make her “teachable”. That word grabbed me and made me feel convicted. Next morning, I asked my self if I was teachable. I started incorporating the word into my prayers.

Soon I realized that, even as Christians, with our one true God as our Lord and Master, we find it hard to be teachable. Maybe some of you are blessed in this area but I am still seeking to be teachable. Here is what I found.

To be teachable, one has to truly be humble. God’s instructions come from random sources, He expects us to squash our pride and be open. Be an active listener, do not bring pre-defined judgments when interacting with people. You never know what they may say or do that will set you off on a journey of learning.

“Judge not, that you be not judged.”

Matthew 7:1

This does not mean, that you are not supposed to have an opinion and verify facts, it means that you should go to each interaction with a pure heart, don’t judge even if the source is corrupt. Judgement is for God, you are meant to love and seek out the good in every interaction. Try it and see, the world around you will transform into a wealth of information. God will guide you to what needs to be filtered out and what needs to be treasured. Happy Learning!

Dear Jesus,

Make me teachable, open my heart to your wisdom, let me learn and absorb everything You want me to. Keep me humble in the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. May it all be to bring you glory. Amen!
