Salt, Light and a Little Sting

A few months ago, I was faced with a leadership challenge. How does one lead people who are doing the best they can but simply do not get it? When you feel like common sense has left the building and you want to scream, what do you do? Surprise — you pray. I am now reaping the benefits of that prayer and wanted to share it with you.

But first, some backstory. Satan worked on me and made me believe that as a woman, leading is not something I should be doing, especially when leading men. After a confusing few days, I asked God to show me the way forward, and He placed Deborah in front of me. Judges chapter 4 kept popping up: a reference here, a reference there, all unrelated to each other but each one significant to me. I was clearly being beckoned to read it, and so I did. Deborah’s story is understated. Nothing spectacular jumps out at you if you are not looking for it. But the words “Then Deborah arose and went” caught my attention.

Obviously, I dove in and did some research on Deborah. Note that I am not a theologian; these are simply the musings of a child of God looking for answers. Here is what I found. Deborah’s root word is dabar in Hebrew and relates to ordered, purposeful speech and community-oriented action. It symbolizes a hardworking leader who, like a bee, works on behalf of the community, producing sweetness (wisdom) while holding a sting to defend it.

When paired with King Solomon’s instructions about guarding the tongue, it becomes clear that the mandate is to protect, preserve, work hard, and rally the troops with words that heal and guide.

“The words of the reckless pierce like swords,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”

-Proverbs 12:18

With the role model of a Deborah who cares and guards her tongue, Jesus’ instructions to be the light and the salt come to life.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

-Matthew 5:13-16

I would like to remind you today that whatever you do, there is an element of leadership in it. God granted you that role and will naturally support you in succeeding. Trust Him and cast your concerns on Him. Preserve, protect, and let your light shine, for it has been mercifully bestowed in you. God bless you.

Dear God,

Thank You for trusting me with the care, protection, and leadership of others. Please guide me to be a servant leader like You, showing the way with abundant forbearance. May I bring You glory today. Amen.
